Message for December 22, 2013 from Pastor Jerry

*“And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.  For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” Acts 10:45-46(NKJV)

What an amazing event that took place at Cornelius’ house of which this verse refers.  Gentiles were saved and received the Holy Ghost just by hearing and believing the words of Peter.  This group was not associated with Mosaic Law or Jewish teachings about God. To the Jews they were pagans and had no relationship with the true God.  Yet, these pagans had just received the Holy Ghost of God by grace through faith.  No works were involved in this transaction.  That is why it is referred to as a “gift” because they did not earn it by their performance.

Later, when questions arose about Gentiles adopting Jewish practices,  the Apostles and the Holy Spirit made no further Mosaic requirements of them (Acts 15).  When something is done in exchange for a benefit it is not a free gift.  A free gift is only a free gift when the receiver has done nothing to earn it.  The free gift of salvation was not given only to those who deserved.  “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Rom 3:23

This time of year many gifts will be exchanged.  Do you believe you have earned a few gifts?  If you earned them they are not gifts, are they?  Exchanging gifts usually means, you give me something and I give you something.  Free gifts have no conditions attached.  Jesus wants to exchange gifts with you.  Do you have anything to give Him that He doesn’t already have?  I have a suggestion. Exchange your sin for His righteousness.  It is a gift, you know.
