We Become What Our Hearts Focus On

We Become What Our Hearts Focus On
The purpose of religion is to keep you focused on your sins and failures.  Whereas the goal of the gospel is to keep you focused on Jesus.  We live and have a relationship with God from the context of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.  It is from this reality that we can have boldness and unwavering confidence in God’s goodness toward us.  Whatever you focus on becomes your identity.
In Matthew Chapter 14, Peter was only able to walk on water when he kept his focus on Jesus.  The moment he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the storm, faith was replaced by fear that reminded him of his own mortality.  Thus, he lost the ability to live in the supernatural.  Truth is, storms in life will come and go, but we should never let them rob us of our focus.                                                                    Our source of faith, supernatural strength, and ability is determined by how we see Jesus today. “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness on the day of judgment: because AS HE IS, SO ARE WE in this world” (1 John 4:17).
Like Peter, we all fail in our lives at times.  However, when we lose our focus, it is important to always remember that Jesus doesn’t ever lose His focus on us.  Peter might have momentarily taken his eyes off Jesus, but Jesus never took His eyes off Peter.  I would rather be a wet, water-walking believer than a dry boat-sitter who was too cowardly to leave the boat. Failures in life are part of what living is all about.  Don’t condemn yourself for missing it in life because the One who gave His life and blood for you has never turned His back on you or taken His eyes off you.  He can recover, restore, and strengthen you when you place your focus back on Him.  “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness.  If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” (Matthew 6:22-23)
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7
